Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3, (cholecalciferol), is necessary for retaining bone density and for maintaining the body's immunity against cancers, heart disease, diabetes, weakness, muscle wasting and osteoporosis, among other disorders. Vitamin D3, like all variations in the vitamin D family, is actually a hormone, produced naturally in the body. Although very few foods contain vitamin D3, it is readily available through the absorption of the sun's rays.

Vitamin D3 aids in the body's absorption of calcium, needed for bone density. Supplemental dosages of the vitamin may decrease the severity of osteoporosis and high blood pressure in the elderly who do not receive adequate exposure to the sun. Other bone density conditions, such as rickets, are apparent in malnourished children, resulting in skeletal deformity. These children are often found in poverty-stricken countries where their malnourished mothers breastfeed them.
